Bubble Tea Without Sugar – a low-sugar base for your boba
Bubble tea without sugar – you decide how sweet it gets
Classic shop-bought bubble tea is usually sweetened: syrup, sweetened milk and pearls steeped in sugar water add up fast. When you make your bubble tea yourself, you decide again at every ingredient. This collection holds the base for that: loose leaf tea, TEABALLS and powders with no added sugar. We ship from Basel across Switzerland.
A sugar-free base: loose leaf tea and TEABALLS
Pure tea contains no sugar of its own. Our loose organic teas – green, black, oolong, rooibos or chai – are infusion blends without added sugar and work just as well cold-brewed as hot. If you prefer things simple, take TEABALLS: compressed tea balls that dissolve in seconds. According to the manufacturer one drink comes to around 3 calories. Our powders such as organic matcha, guarana or cocoa plant protein also come without added sugar.
And the pearls? Counted honestly
Here we stay factual: fruit pearls and tapioca pearls are not sugar-free. Popping boba consist of fruit juice and sugar syrup inside an alginate shell, and tapioca pearls are usually steeped in sugar water after cooking. If you want pearls, you are bringing sugar into the glass – there is no way around that. What you can control is the amount: instead of 40 g, 15–20 g of fruit pearls per serving is often enough as a topping, and the exact nutritional values are listed on every product page. Tapioca pearls can also be served without the sugar bath, although they harden more quickly that way. The specific figures per product are always in the product description.
How to build a low-sugar bubble tea
Brew the tea hot or cold and let it cool. Instead of sweetened condensed milk, use unsweetened plant drinks or milk. Skip the syrup or cut it right back – fruity teas such as strawberry-mint or hibiscus already bring aroma without you having to sweeten. Only at the end do you decide on the topping. Recipe ideas are on our bubble tea recipes page, and the basics under what is bubble tea?.

Frequently asked questions
Is there bubble tea completely without sugar? The base, yes: pure tea, TEABALLS and unsweetened plant drinks contain no added sugar. As soon as fruit pearls or tapioca pearls join in, there is sugar in the drink. Without pearls, a bubble tea can be prepared practically sugar-free.
How many calories does bubble tea have? That depends entirely on the ingredients. Pure tea contributes almost no calories, TEABALLS around 3 calories per drink according to the manufacturer. Milk, syrup and pearls make up the bulk. Exact nutritional values are on each product page.
Do fruit pearls contain sugar? Yes. Popping boba are made of fruit juice and sugar syrup. They are a sweet topping, not a sugar-free ingredient. You can keep the portion small, though.
Which tea works as a low-sugar bubble tea base? Fruity varieties with their own aroma work well because you need to sweeten less – for example green tea strawberry-mint, hibiscus or rooibos. Rooibos is caffeine-free on top of that.
