Boba, bubbles, tapioca pearls – whatever you call them, these little spheres are the heart of every bubble tea. Without them, a bubble tea is just an ordinary milk tea. So it is no surprise that more and more people in Switzerland are looking for boba to recreate their favourite trend drink at home.

What is boba? The different types explained

Black tapioca pearls (classic boba)

The original boba from Taiwan. Made from tapioca starch, water and brown sugar. Once cooked they are soft, pleasantly chewy and naturally subtly sweet. The classic choice for milk tea versions.

Preparation time: 2–3 min. cooking + 2–3 min. resting
Price: CHF 12.90 for 250 g
→ Buy black tapioca pearls

Popping boba – fruit pearls (bubbles with a filling)

Also known as fruit pearls or bubbles: these spheres have a thin alginate shell filled with fruity juice. They burst as you bite into them – an unforgettable taste experience. Available in ten flavours: raspberry, apricot, passion fruit, salted caramel, lychee, piña colada, blood orange, wild strawberry, peach and mango.

Advantage: no cooking required – straight from the pack into your glass.
Price: from CHF 14.50 for 240 g, catering pack 1.5 kg from CHF 39.00
→ Buy popping boba / fruit pearls

Where can you buy boba in Switzerland?

Boba is hard to find in ordinary supermarkets (Migros, Coop, Lidl). Asian grocery shops in Zurich, Bern or Basel sometimes carry a small selection – but the choice is limited, the quality varies and you will almost never find fruit pearls.

The obvious option is therefore to buy online at meinbubbletea.ch:

  • ✓ Ten fruit pearl flavours plus classic black tapioca pearls
  • ✓ Free shipping from CHF 79 within Switzerland & Liechtenstein
  • ✓ Fast delivery – 1–3 working days
  • ✓ Swiss quality standards – safe food, checked imported goods

What to look for when buying boba

Not all tapioca pearls are the same. These four features tell you that you are dealing with good boba:

  • Cooking time: quick-cooking pearls are ready in around 5 minutes (2–3 minutes cooking, 2–3 minutes resting) – not only after half an hour.
  • Texture: slightly firm on the outside, soft on the inside – the so-called chewy effect. Inferior pearls turn mushy instead of chewy.
  • Ingredient list: short and free of artificial preservatives – a good sign of clean production.
  • Packaging & shelf life: vacuum-sealed pearls keep longer and hold their quality far better.

The same principle applies to powders: the fewer additives, the more aromatic and natural your finished drink will taste.

What else you need for your boba tea

Boba alone does not make a bubble tea. These ingredients belong in it too:

  • Tea base: black tea or oolong are the classics, and green tea works well with fruit boba. → Discover tea in the shop
  • Milk: condensed milk, oat milk or whole milk – whatever you prefer.
  • Powder: ube, organic matcha, organic guarana or organic cacao protein – see powders. For the on-trend tiger milk tea you stir up the brown sugar syrup yourself.
  • Wide straws (12 mm): nothing works without them – the pearls have to fit through. → Bubble tea accessories

How do you use boba? The basic recipe

For classic tapioca pearls:

  1. Bring plenty of water to the boil (10× the volume of the pearls)
  2. Stir the boba into the boiling water and as soon as they float, put the lid on and cook for 2–3 min. over medium heat
  3. Turn off the heat and let them stand, covered, for 2–3 min.
  4. Drain in a sieve and rinse with cold water
  5. Steep in sugar syrup – done!

Popping boba (fruit pearls) need no preparation at all – simply add 2–3 tablespoons to your drink!

Would you rather buy everything at once? Then our bubble tea sets are the right choice. They cost CHF 32.90 to 34.90 and make 6 to 8 servings depending on the flavour.

FAQ: buying boba in Switzerland

How much does boba cost?

Black tapioca pearls cost CHF 12.90 for 250 g. Popping boba starts at CHF 14.50 for 240 g, and the 1.5 kg catering pack starts at CHF 39.00.

Is making boba at home worth it compared with a café?

Yes. A bubble tea in a Swiss café costs CHF 7 to 9. A set for CHF 32.90 to 34.90 makes 6 to 8 servings depending on the flavour – that works out at around CHF 5 per drink, a good third less. And you decide yourself how much sugar goes in.

How long does boba keep?

Unopened, up to 24 months. Once cooked, tapioca pearls should be used within 4–6 hours – they harden in the fridge. Opened popping boba keeps for about 2–3 weeks in the fridge.

Can I freeze boba?

Uncooked tapioca pearls can be frozen. Already cooked pearls should be used fresh, however, because freezing changes their texture.
